Ryanair operates more European flights than any other airline — and has more EU261 compensation claims than any carrier. If you've been delayed or cancelled on Ryanair, here's what you need to know.

Ryanair is subject to EU261 on all flights departing EU airports, and flights arriving in the EU on an EU-based carrier. Since Ryanair is Irish-registered, all their European routes are covered.
| Flight Distance | Delay | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 3+ hours | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | 3+ hours | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | 4+ hours | €600 |
Most Ryanair flights are short-haul (under 1,500 km), so €250 is the most common amount.
Ryanair frequently cites weather for delays, even when:
- Other airlines on the same route operated normally
- The weather event was hours ago
- Weather was at a different airport entirely
What to do: Check historical weather data for your departure and arrival airports. If conditions were normal, challenge the claim.
Ryanair sometimes blames ATC for delays that are actually their own scheduling problems.
What to do: Ask for specific ATC restriction documentation. If they can't provide it, the claim is likely invalid.
Ryanair sometimes simply doesn't respond within the 8-week legal deadline.
What to do: After 8 weeks with no response, escalate to the Irish Aviation Authority or your national enforcement body.
Ryanair may offer travel vouchers instead of cash compensation.
What to do: You have the right to insist on cash. Vouchers have restrictions and expiry dates — don't accept unless the value exceeds your compensation.
If you booked through a third party (Kiwi, Booking.com), Ryanair may tell you to claim through them.
What to do: EU261 makes the operating airline responsible for compensation, not the booking platform. Insist on filing directly with Ryanair.
Ryanair doesn't sell connecting flights — each leg is separate. If your first Ryanair flight is delayed and you miss the second, Ryanair won't rebook you or compensate for the missed second leg.
However: You can still claim compensation for the first flight's delay.
If your flight is cancelled and you get a refund, Ryanair should also refund baggage and seat selection fees. They often "forget" — make sure to claim these.
Ryanair has had multiple pilot and cabin crew strikes. Whether strikes count as extraordinary circumstances depends on whether they were the airline's own staff or third parties (like airport ground crew).
| Strike Type | Extraordinary? |
|---|---|
| Ryanair pilot strike | ❌ Usually no |
| Airport ground crew strike | ✅ Usually yes |
| ATC strike | ✅ Yes |
| Baggage handler strike | Depends on specifics |
Ryanair is Irish-registered, but your time limit depends on the country of departure or arrival:
| Country | Time Limit |
|---|---|
| Germany | 3 years |
| UK | 6 years |
| Ireland | 6 years |
| Spain | 5 years |
| Italy | 2 years |
Ryanair makes claiming deliberately difficult. We know their playbook and how to beat it.
